Jakarta, Pintu News – Ethereum , the cryptocurrency with the second-largest market capitalization currently worth $220 billion at $1,824, is the benchmark for many blockchains. However, Ethereum is far from perfect. In a recent post titled “Simplifying the L1,” Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, shared his vision for the future of the platform.

Setting Complexity Limits

Vitalik Buterin proposed the radical idea of setting a maximum line of code limit for the Ethereum protocol. This aims to keep the system lean and easier to understand, audit, and maintain. The current consensus system, Beacon Chain, while powerful, is admittedly complicated. Buterin suggested replacing it with a simpler alternative, developed from years of research and experience.

Updating the Execution Layer

Ethereum’s execution layer, specifically the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), has become increasingly complex over time. Vitalik admits that some of that complexity is the result of his own decisions, “The EVM is getting more and more complex, and a lot of that complexity is proving to be unnecessary… over-optimized 256-bit virtual machines for very specific forms of cryptography… over-optimized precompiles for single use cases that are barely used.”

More Efficient Transition to Virtual Machines

Instead of focusing on small improvements, Vitalik Buterin suggests a total transition of Ethereum to a simpler and more efficient virtual machine, perhaps something like RISC-V or another VM already used in Ethereum’s zero-knowledge proofing system.

This overhaul could bring significant benefits, including performance improvements that may be more than 100 times faster. For developers, this change could improve the experience by allowing languages like Solidity and Vyper to be compiled into the new VM.

Conclusion

Vitalik Buterin’s message is clear: Ethereum doesn’t need to get more complicated to become more powerful. By simplifying its consensus and execution layers and keeping the codebase lean, Ethereum can become more secure and more efficient in the long run.
