Jakarta, Pintu News – After a long legal battle with Epic Games, Apple has finally relaxed its policy regarding cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the App Store. This change was announced following a ruling from the US District Court in an antitrust case involving Epic Games. Now, app developers have more freedom to integrate and promote NFT services, which could bring a breath of fresh air to the crypto industry.
In August 2020, Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, sued Apple alleging that the App Store rules were anti-competitive. Epic Games protested having to use Apple’s payment system that took a 30% cut of every in-app transaction. The conflict escalated when Epic introduced a direct payment option within the Fortnite app, which Apple later removed from the App Store for violating the policy.
In April 2025, US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Apple willfully violated the 2021 court order. The judge judged that Apple was still creating barriers for developers to use alternative payment systems. As a result, the case was referred to federal prosecutors to consider possible criminal charges against Apple.

Based on the court mandate, Apple has updated the App Store guidelines giving more flexibility to developers with regards to NFTs. Apps can now use in-app purchases for NFT-related services such as printing, sales, and transfers.
Users are also allowed to view their own NFTs within the app, and developers can display NFT collections owned by others. The most significant change is that apps in the US App Store can now offer external links or buttons that direct users to websites outside the platform to complete NFT purchases. This is a reversal of Apple’s previous policy, which was very strict against these kinds of transactions.
Despite the relaxation, Apple still imposes strict restrictions. Apps are not allowed to conduct cryptocurrency mining, offer token-based rewards, or accept cryptocurrency as a payment method directly within the app. NFT purchases through off-platform links are allowed, however, in-app payments must still go through Apple’s system unless they are made off-platform.
These changes only apply to the App Store in the US, and Apple is still continuing its appeal against the court order. However, the move is considered a significant advancement in the way Apple treats digital assets and could be a stepping stone for more innovation and openness among its developer base.
This change in Apple’s policy opens up new opportunities for crypto app developers to innovate and offer better services to users. With more freedom to integrate and market NFTs, the crypto industry might see faster growth and more adoption by mainstream users.
