Jakarta, Pintu News – When Peter Navarro, Donald Trump’s former trade advisor, stated that BRICS countries “hate each other,” his statement may sound harsh but it contains a bit of truth. Economic rivalry between developing countries often makes them unhappy to see each other’s success. For the reasons that will be outlined, BRICS is predicted to fail.
After the Trump administration imposed tariffs that affected the economies of BRICS countries, Brazilian President Lula da Silva held an online meeting with other member countries. However, the meeting did not lead to any conclusions.
They failed to address the main issue in the spotlight, which is Trump’s foreign policy. This failure reflects the political culture in their respective countries that talk more than solve the main problem: de-dollarization.

India and China have been at odds for six decades over border disputes. China’s dominance in manufacturing has also backed India into a corner. In fact, the Indian Prime Minister has banned some Chinese products and appealed to its citizens not to buy products made in China.
However, after the tariffs from the US put pressure, India started approaching China again. This suggests that BRICS may fail as India may abandon China if the US lifts its tariffs.
While BRICS leaders spoke out strongly against Trump’s tariffs, they themselves have long placed trade barriers. The de-dollarization agenda got a boost after the Biden administration imposed sanctions on Russia following its invasion and war against Ukraine. Despite major efforts to reduce the dominance of the US dollar, the BRICS initiative is predicted to fail significantly.
With numerous internal and external challenges, as well as a lack of unity in the face of harsh foreign policies, BRICS is likely to face major obstacles in achieving its goals. Failure to address critical issues and sharp internal rivalries make the alliance’s future prospects bleak.
