Jakarta, Pintu News – A new polemic emerged in the crypto community when Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum , and Anatoly Yakovenko, founder of Solana , expressed conflicting views regarding Ethereum’s layer-2 (L2) network security. Check out the full news here!

Vitalik Buterin’s opinion on L2 Security

Vitalik Buterin insists that Ethereum’s L2 solution remains secure, even in the event of a 51% attack. According to him, because L2 inherits finality from the Ethereum main network (ETH), collusion between validators will not be able to steal user assets. Buterin added on the X platform that this security is only compromised when validators perform tasks outside of the blockchain’s direct control.

Ethereum’s L2 network, including Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, and Worldchain, currently holds more than $35 billion in total value locked (TVL). With over a million validators, many believe that the network is more resilient than Solana (SOL) which only has around 2,000 validators.

Criticism from Anatoly Yakovenko

In contrast, Anatoly Yakovenko doubts that L2 really “inherits the security of Ethereum (ETH).” He argues that after five years of Ethereum’s L2 development, the risks are still similar to inter-chain bridges like Wormhole. Yakovenko highlighted some key issues such as complex code vulnerabilities, centralized multi-signature wallets, and off-chain data processing that reduces transparency.

Yakovenko also suggested the creation of a special bridge that would allow Ethereum (ETH) to serve as the L2 for Solana (SOL), which he said would make cross-chain transactions more secure. This suggests a different approach to addressing security issues between the two blockchains.

Does Scalability Come at the Cost of Security?

With over 150 L2 networks in existence, the question of whether scalability can be achieved without compromising security is becoming increasingly relevant. The debate between Buterin and Yakovenko highlights the different approaches to ensuring the security of digital assets in this evolving blockchain era.

The development of blockchain technology is ongoing, and with each innovation, new challenges arise. This discussion paves the way for further research and development of solutions that can strike a balance between scalability and security.

Conclusion

This debate between two prominent figures in the crypto world shows how dynamic the evolution of blockchain technology is. Despite their differences of opinion, both sides agreed that user security is a top priority. This discussion is not only important for developers and investors, but also for anyone interested in the future of digital finance.
