Gambar Donald Trump is investing heavily to revive Venezuela’s oil industry!

Jakarta, Pintu News – President Donald Trump has visions of reactivating Venezuela’s oil industry with American help, but analysts from Wall Street and Houston think that this process will not be quick or cheap. According to a Bloomberg report, it would take an investment of more than $100 billion and a minimum of ten years to restore the country’s oil system.

Francisco Monaldi, director of Latin American energy policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute, stated that Venezuela would need an investment of $10 billion per year for ten years to restore production to 1970s levels, when the country produced nearly 4 million barrels per day.

Infrastructure Damage Hinders Recovery

During the twelve years of Nicolás Maduro’s leadership, Venezuela’s oil infrastructure suffered severe damage. Although Maduro has been captured by US forces, problems such as broken pipelines and stolen equipment remain unaddressed. Ports in Venezuela now operate very slowly, loading supertankers can take up to five days.

The Orinoco basin, which holds nearly half a trillion barrels of recoverable oil, now looks more like a graveyard of abandoned rigs. Equipment is often stolen and sold as spare parts. Underground pipelines are badly damaged and some are even stolen by the state oil company to be sold as scrap. Fires and explosions are common, destroying vital machinery needed for production.

Analysts from RBC Capital Markets, including Helima Croft, assess that hopes for a quick recovery are a dream. They warn that a full recovery is only possible if there is a complete easing of sanctions and a smooth transition of power. Neil Shearing, principal economist at Capital Economics, added that although Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserves, it means little without political stability and adequate investment.

Analysts from Goldman Sachs, including Daan Struyven, estimate that Brent crude oil prices could fluctuate by $2 per barrel depending on Venezuela’s performance. If production increases or decreases by 400,000 barrels per day, prices could rise or fall. Longer term, if Venezuela reaches a production of 2 million barrels per day by 2030, this could lower oil prices by $4 per barrel from current projections.

Chevron is the only major US oil company still drilling in Venezuela. The Houston-based company is responsible for about 25% of current production and is allowed to operate under a special license despite US sanctions. Chevron said it is focused on worker safety and the protection of its assets in Venezuela. “We continue to operate in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations,” the company said.
