Jakarta, Pintu News – In a recent development, the original five-nation BRICS has now grown into an alliance with eleven full members. The latest addition is Saudi Arabia which officially joined in July 2025, marking a significant increase in the number of member countries.
Today, the BRICS account for nearly half of the global population and more than 41% of the world’s GDP. This expansion not only shows an increase in the number of countries interested in joining but also marks a significant shift in global power.

Despite pressure from the West, some European countries have shown strong interest in joining BRICS. Belarus, Serbia and Turkey are the three most active countries in pursuing membership. Belarus, for example, has been very vocal in its desire to become a new member, seeking an economic alternative to Western sanctions.
Turkey, although still a NATO member, has applied for BRICS membership, showing that the desire to join is not limited to countries not in alliance with the West. Serbia, which was the first European country to express interest, shows that European interest in BRICS cuts across regions and political alliances.

From Asia and Africa, many countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS. Countries like Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh and others have shown high interest. Vietnam, as a recent example, indicates that these countries want to join BRICS for sovereignty reasons by 2025.
This expansion shows that new countries are seeking alternatives to Western-dominated institutions. It also explains why the list of BRICS countries continues to grow rapidly, marking a major transformation in international relations today.
The summit held in Rio in July 2025 has determined the new countries that will be accepted as the next BRICS members. However, building consensus remains a challenge as various members have different views on the pace of expansion. China, Russia and Iran are pushing for rapid growth to add more countries as new members.
Despite US President Donald Trump declaring that “BRICS is dead” and threatening with 100% tariffs, BRICS continues to attract countries seeking alternatives to dollar-dominated trade. This suggests that BRICS represents a fundamental shift in the global power structure, with many countries eager to join the alliance.
The expansion of BRICS shows that interest includes countries from every continent seeking economic sovereignty and alternatives to Western institutions. The growing list of BRICS countries and continued interest from potential new members signals a major transformation in international relations today.
