5 UK-US Crypto Cooperation Agendas that Could Accelerate Stablecoin Adoption

1. UK wants to adopt US-style pro-crypto approach

According to a Financial Times report, UK Treasury Secretary Rachel Reeves and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have held discussions to strengthen coordination regarding cryptocurrency policy.

The meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from Coinbase, Circle Internet Group, Ripple, Bank of America, Barclays, and Citi. This reflects the seriousness of both countries to make the crypto industry more globally integrated.

The discussion is also said to have taken place on a “last-minute” basis after crypto advocacy groups urged the UK to open up to the sector. According to them, the government’s cautious approach has left the UK lagging behind other countries in terms of innovation.

2. Focus on stablecoins is key to cooperation

One of the main focuses of this cooperation is stablecoins, digital assets whose value is pegged to fiat currencies like the US dollar. US President Donald Trump is said to have made stablecoins a policy priority, even having a personal business interest in the sector.

According to the Financial Times, the restriction proposed by the Bank of England, limiting stablecoin holdings to 10,000-20,000 pounds (equivalent to Rp226 million to Rp452 million), is considered too strict and difficult to implement.

This policy has been heavily criticized by the UK crypto community as it could hinder the adoption and burden the operations of blockchain-based companies.

3. UK Banking Accused of Hindering Crypto Adoption

A survey of 2,000 crypto investors revealed that about 40% of them experienced blocked or delayed transactions by UK banks.

Concerns over volatility, fraud, and scams are still the main reasons traditional banks restrict access to crypto services. However, this is counterproductive to the growing digital finance ecosystem.

Despite criticism, the UK has made progress in crypto regulation. In May 2025, the government proposed a new legal framework that equates crypto entities such as exchanges and brokers with traditional financial institutions.

5. Long-term Crypto Investment Interest in the UK Increases

A survey from insurance company Aviva shows that 27% of UK adults are considering including crypto in their retirement funds.

Of this group, more than 40% claimed to be interested because of the potential high returns. Meanwhile, around 20% of the respondents, or about 11.6 million people, stated that they currently own or have owned crypto assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH).
