Sei Network Prepares to Launch Giga Upgrade, What’s New?

January 19, 2026

Jakarta, Pintu News – Sei Network is getting closer to its long-awaited major update, the Giga upgrade, and the developers say that the final stages of technical work have begun.

While many users are looking forward to the launch date, the team mentioned that the most important progress is happening behind the scenes with SIP-3, a major update that changes the way the network works.

SIP-3: Paving the Way for Sei Giga

In his latest update, Sei (SEI) co-founder Jayendra Jog shared that SIP-3 aims to simplify the core workings of Sei. Instead of supporting EVM and Cosmos transactions simultaneously, the network will transition to being entirely EVM-based.

This means that Sei will remove much of the complicated legacy code associated with Cosmos and CosmWasm. By removing this extra “load”, the network can run more efficiently and improve its performance scalability.

It is worth noting that the Sei community approved this update back in May, and it is currently being introduced in stages.

What EVM-Only Means for Sei

Once SIP-3 is fully implemented, only EVM addresses can send transactions on the Sei network, while Cosmos-based transactions will be phased out.

While this change may seem small, it is actually a major shift. By focusing solely on EVM, Sei was able to optimize its performance, tools, and infrastructure more fully. The Sei team states that it is this more streamlined approach that allows for major improvements through Giga upgrades.

Sei aims to become a fully EVM-based network by mid-2026, with most of the SIP-3 implementation completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Network Release and Timeline

SIP-3 will be rolled out through several protocol updates as follows:

  • v6.3 (Testnet – Jan-Mar): Added full support for staking via EVM, as well as allowing indexers and custodians to track staking activity using the EVM API.
  • v6.4 (Testnet – Jan-Mar): Allows Sei to block IBC inbound transfers, so Cosmos-based assets can no longer be bridged into the network.

Future updates will also disable IBC outbound transfers and replace Sei’s native oracles with reputable providers such as Chainlink (LINK), API3 (API3), and Pyth (PYTH).

All of these changes will only be enforced on the mainnet after approval from the governance mechanism, and are expected to be implemented by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Important Actions for Sei Users

The SIP-3 update brings some important warnings for users:

  • USDC.n holders are advised to switch to native USDC immediately, or risk losing access once IBC transfers are turned off.
  • Other IBC assets, such as ATOM, should be removed from the Sei network before the mainnet changes take effect.
  • DeFi users who rely on IBC tokens are advised to close their positions early to avoid risks.

Sei Labs recommends using third-party tools like Skip:Go to help with this transition process, while still reminding users to do their own research (DYOR – Do Your Own Research).

Sei Giga and the 200,000 TPS Target

With SIP-3 being the “load shedding” phase, Sei Giga is the next step to push transaction capacity up to the ambitious target of 200,000 transactions per second (TPS).

Community leaders describe SIP-3 as not just a routine update, but a performance reset. By removing complexity and focusing on a single system design, Sei believes it can scale more efficiently than other high-TPS networks that still rely on layered architectures.

Designing for a Post-Quantum Future

Beyond speed, some in the Sei community are now starting to look at long-term security as the network grows. One topic that is starting to receive attention is post-quantum cryptography, which uses much larger signatures and higher verification costs-a big challenge for high-throughput blockchains.

Sei contributors say that their network design lends itself to approaches such as proof batching, recursive verification, and incentive-based security. Instead of thinking of resilience to quantum attacks as just a cryptographic key change, Sei sees it as a systemic challenge that must be integrated with extreme performance.

Although no blockchain is yet fully resistant to quantum computing, Sei’s supporters believe that this performance-first approach could be an advantage in the future.

Conclusion

SIP-3 was a big change for Sei Network. By switching to an EVM-only model, simplifying the protocol, and gearing up for Sei Giga, Sei is betting on long-term performance, scalability, and flexibility.

With a major announcement about Giga said to be coming soon, attention is now on how well this update is executed – and whether Sei is able to realize its ambition of redefining the high-performance Layer-1 blockchain standard.
