Stablecoins dominate salary payments in the crypto industry

Pantera Capital’s survey of more than 1,600 crypto professionals across 77 countries shows a significant shift towards blockchain-based payroll systems. Stablecoins are the top choice, reflecting institutions’ growing confidence in digital assets pegged to the United States dollar, such as USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT).

USD Coin issued by Circle leads the way, accounting for 63% of all crypto salary payouts. This is quite surprising considering USDT is the stablecoin with the largest trading volume globally. Pantera Capital cites one of the reasons for this is because major payroll providers such as Deel, Remote, and Rippling do not offer payroll payments using USDT.

Combined, USDC and USDT accounted for more than 90% of total crypto-based salary payments. According to DeFiLlama data, the total market capitalization of all stablecoins stood at around IDR4,378 trillion ($268.6 billion) at the time of the report.

Compensation Structure is Increasingly Long-Term Oriented

In addition to payment methods, the report reveals new trends in compensation structures in the cryptocurrency industry. A total of 88% of vesting schedules are now set for a four-year period, up from 64% in the previous year. This pattern shows that companies are increasingly focusing on long-term alignment with employees.

Interestingly, hands-on experience and technical expertise in the blockchain industry are more valued than academic degrees. The data shows that professionals with a bachelor’s degree earn an average salary of around IDR 4.66 billion ($286,039), higher than holders of master’s degrees who receive an average of IDR 3.49 billion ($214,359) or doctorates who receive around IDR 3.7 billion ($226,858).

Circle’s Grand Strategy Drives USDC Adoption

Circle, the issuer of USDC, continues to expand its position as an institutional payment and payroll infrastructure, not just a trading tool. In March 2024, Circle entered into a partnership with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) – the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange – to explore the integration of USDC and tokenized funds in global derivatives markets.

Another strategic step is to apply for a federal trust bank charter with the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in May 2024. The long-term goal is to provide an officially regulated stablecoin infrastructure for payments, custody, and transaction settlement.

Ultimately, in July 2024, US President Donald Trump signed into law the GENIUS Act which established a regulatory framework for stablecoin issuers. USDC was cited as an example of a regulated digital dollar model, driving Circle’s positive image in the eyes of regulators and industry players.
