Sony Injects Rp218 Billion into Startale, Soneium Projected to Become Global Crypto Engine

Jakarta, Pintu News – Sony has reaffirmed its ambitions in the crypto and cryptocurrency sector by pouring substantial funds into Startale Group. Through the Sony Innovation Fund, Sony Ventures added a further investment of US$13 million or equivalent to Rp218.36 billion to support the development of Soneium.

This move shows that Sony sees blockchain technology as a long-term strategic foundation. The investment also strengthens Sony’s position as an institutional player in the global web3 ecosystem.

Sony’s Further Investment and Startale’s Strategic Position

Sony Ventures announced follow-on funding to Startale Group as part of its long-term commitment to blockchain infrastructure development. The US$13 million investment follows an initial funding in 2023 and a seed extension in 2024.

With this addition, Startale’s total funding since its establishment has reached around US$20 million or Rp335.94 billion. The figure reflects the strong confidence of strategic investors in Startale’s business direction.

Startale is a spin-off company from the Astar Foundation that serves as the main architect and provider of Soneium’s technical infrastructure. Startale Group CEO Sota Watanabe emphasized that Sony has been a key partner since the early stages of the project.

He said the company’s vision is to bring the world to a global on-chain ecosystem. Sony’s continued support is important to realize the scale and stability of the crypto infrastructure needed.

Soneium as Layer-2 Ethereum Infrastructure for Entertainment

Soneium is a layer-2 Ethereum network developed with Sony Block Solutions Labs utilizing Optimism’s OP Stack. The network is designed to open up on-chain opportunities for the entertainment industry, including games, music, and digital content. Since the launch of the mainnet in January last year, Soneium has processed more than 500 million transactions. This demonstrates the high level of adoption and activity in the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem.

In addition to transaction volume, Soneium currently supports more than 250 active decentralized applications. A number of major protocols such as Uniswap and Aave have been integrated into this network. These integrations strengthen Soneium’s credibility as a crypto infrastructure that is ready for widespread use.

Ecosystem Expansion and Sony’s Web3 Ambitions

This partnership enables the streaming of real-world asset tokenization returns through the SkyLink interoperability engine.

Meanwhile, Sony is also expanding its foray into the web3 sector with plans to issue stablecoins. Sony Bank, a subsidiary of Sony Financial Group, plans to issue a US dollar stablecoin for the United States market in fiscal year 2026. On the other hand, Sony Singapore has accepted payments using USD Coin (USDC) through a partnership with Crypto.com.
