Jakarta, Pintu News – Ethereum (ETH) Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist recently proposed a significant upgrade that could transform Ethereum’s (ETH) transaction capacity.
This Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-9698) aims to increase the gas limit of the main network, potentially increasing transactions per second (TPS) to 2,000.
This initiative comes at a good time given the need for higher scalability in blockchain.

Currently, Ethereum’s (ETH) gas limit stands at 36 million, which only supports around 14-20 TPS with a theoretical maximum of up to 119 TPS. In contrast, Solana (SOL) reaches 800 to over 1,000 TPS, with a theoretical maximum of up to 65,000 TPS.

EIP-9698 proposes increasing the gas limit to 3.6 billion, allowing each block to hold about 6,000 transactions. The deterministic gas limit growth plan starts from epoch 369017, around June 1.
The gas limit will increase at each epoch of the beacon chain, with a tenfold increase every 164,250 epochs, or approximately every two years. This increase will continue for four years, providing greater capacity in a gradual and managed manner.
With a coordinated and predictable gas limit increase mechanism, EIP-9698 promotes sustainable and transparent gas limit trajectories. This is in line with expected developments in hardware and protocol efficiency.
This proposed change is non-consensus and fully backward compatible, meaning that clients that do not implement EIP will continue to operate as before. However, a rapid increase in gas limits may put pressure on less optimized nodes and lead to slower block propagation.
However, the exponential schedule with a very gradual increase per epoch provides enough time for node operators and developers to adapt and optimize their systems.
If adopted, EIP-9698 could position Ethereum (ETH) as a stronger competitor in the blockchain space, closing the throughput gap with rival networks. This proposal follows the Ethereum co-founder’s previous ‘radical’ suggestion of replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with RISC-V to address long-term scalability challenges.

Meanwhile, the Pectra upgrade will launch next week. This upgrade improves Ethereum’s scalability by increasing blob throughput, reducing Layer 1 fees, increasing validator flexibility, and optimizing data storage.
These changes improve Layer 2 transaction efficiency, encourage validator participation, and support wider network adoption and scalability.
Overall, with EIP-9698, Ethereum (ETH) has the potential to undergo a transformation that will significantly increase its capacity. It’s not just about technical improvements, but also about strengthening Ethereum’s position in the global competition among blockchain technologies.
This move demonstrates Ethereum’s commitment to continue to innovate and meet the needs of a growing market.
