<p>In economics, something has value if it fulfils two conditions: scarcity and utility. Scarcity means something has a limited supply. <p>Cryptocurrency is a digital currency that is decentralized and secured using cryptography. Unlike fiat currencies such as the rupiah or the US dollar, whose circulation is regulated by the Central Bank, crypto assets can be sent and used without the need for any central authority. Therefore, crypto gives you the freedom to store, send and receive your own assets.<br><br>The word crypto itself comes from the word cryptography, which is a technique of hiding information with a mathematical algorithm. In crypto asset transactions, cryptography guarantees transaction security and the identity of the sender and recipient of assets.</p>



<p>The technology behind crypto also ensured that all transactions are immutable and cannot be reversed, which protect the users from double spending or the possibility of the same assets being spent twice.</p>



<pre class="wp-block-preformatted"><strong>What is double-spending problem?</strong> As you know, it is very easy to copy data in the digital world. When you email a file from your computer to your friend, you are essentially creating a copy of the file. One of the biggest challenge of creating electronic money is to ensure that the same money cannot be spent twice.

Before the invention of blockchain technology, we solve this problem by having a centralized entity (i.e. Banks and e-wallet players such as OVO) to perform debiting and crediting of accounts. Blockchain technology replaces the need of this centralized entity with distributed computers (miners) that can verify transactions independently, but also work together to form consensus / agreement on the latest transaction history on top of the blockchain..</pre>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="what-is-blockchain">What is Blockchain?</h3>



<p>Crypto uses a technology known as blockchain. Blockchain is actually a database that cannot be replaced or changed. You can only add data in this database but you cannot delete or modify it in the future.</p>



<p>Each of these is grouped into structures called &ldquo;blocks&rdquo;, which are then linked to the previous block. The blocks are linked via digital fingerprints, which are called hashes, which make them very easy to detect if someone tries to cheat, change or modify past transactions.<br><br>Each block is connected like a chain, that&rsquo;s why this database system is called blockchain. Blockchain ensures that no one can manipulate past transaction history.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">When someone makes a cryptocurrency transaction, the transaction will be grouped into one block. The block containing a collection of transactions is then validated by miners or miners by solving complex mathematical puzzles that require large computing power.

After a block has been created, the other computers on the network need to verify the data (reach a consensus) before finally adding a new block to the chain or blockchain.</pre>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="why-crypo-is-important">Why Crypo is Important?</h2>



<p>Forms of money have continued to evolve over time: from sea shells to beads, from gold to paper money. Now we have entered the digital era and it&rsquo;s time to use digital money with even more sophisticated advantages. Here are some reasons why the existence of crypto assets is important:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="without-intermediaries">Without Intermediaries</h3>



<p>With crypto, you can transact directly from the sender to the recipient, without the need for an intermediary to mediate the transaction. Each transaction is only made by the sender to the recipient, and can be done directly from each user&rsquo;s wallet.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="affordable-and-fast">Affordable and Fast</h3>



<p>When you send crypto assets to other people in any part of the world, the crypto assets sent will arrive within seconds and be finalized on the spot. This is because crypto can be used globally and has no geographic barriers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="censorship-resistance">Censorship Resistance</h3>



<p>No one can censor or stop crypto asset transactions because crypto is designed with a decentralized network, with miners or validators spread all over the world. Therefore, it is not possible for any single actor or authority to censor or stop crypto transactions.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="secure">Secure</h3>



<p>With a decentralized system, it is nearly impossible to hack crypto assets. To be able to manipulate blockchain data, you must master 51% of miner&rsquo;s or validator&rsquo;s computers, and this is almost impossible to do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="types-of-cryptocurrencies">Types of cryptocurrencies</h2>



<p>There are many cryptos circulating in the market, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Coin, Tether, and so on. But broadly speaking, there are two types of crypto, namely native coins and tokens.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="native-coin">Native coin</h3>



<p>The native coin is a digital asset/coin that was created simultaneously with the creation of a blockchain itself. For example, Bitcoin (BTC) is a native coin circulating on the Bitcoin blockchain, and Ether (ETH) is a native coin on top of the Ethereum blockchain.</p>



<p>In general, to increase the number of native coins in circulation, these native coins need to be &ldquo;mined&rdquo; like a metal commodity. In the crypto world, mining is the activity of validating, processing, and securing transactions in a decentralized manner. &ldquo;Miners&rdquo; who successfully carry out the process will receive a reward in the form of native coins from the blockchain system. Bitcoin blockchain miners will receive BTC.</p>



<p>The value of a coin on the market is determined entirely by supply and demand. If more people use it (eg for investment or other means of exchange of value) more than what available in the market, then its value will increase.</p>



<p>On the contrary, if more coins are sold than buyers, the value will decrease.</p>



<p>All transactions on the blockchain require real coins as fees that are paid to miners. For example, if you want to send BTC on the bitcoin blockchain, you have to pay the miners a fee in BTC. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="token">Token</h3>



<p>In the crypto world, there are certain blockchains that allow programmers/developers to create applications (smart contracts) and new digital assets (tokens) on top of the blockchain. One of the most popular blockchains for developing applications and tokens is Ethereum.</p>



<p>Tokens are cryptos that are issued &ldquo;hitchhike&rdquo; as projects on other blockchain platforms (eg Ethereum). Tokens are issued for specific purposes and the amount can be adjusted by the token developer.</p>



<p>Tokens can be digital securities, stock representations (security tokens), or be used to provide access to a function (utility token) such as cellular pulses used to make calls.</p>



<p>One form of token application is the issuance of stablecoin. Stablecoins are issued as a form of digital representation of the original assets that support them. The original assets are kept by the developer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="what-are-the-functions-of-cryptocurrency">What Are the Functions of Cryptocurrency?</h2>



<p>Like currency, crypto assets can be used to buy and sell goods. However, in Indonesia, crypto assets are currently included in the commodity category, so they cannot be used as an official medium of exchange to buy and sell goods.</p>



<p>Crypto assets as commodities have enormous potential as investment instruments because their value continues to grow as the number of users increases. Here are some examples of its functions, and how these digital assets can be utilized.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="investing">Investing</h3>



<p>One of the things that can be done with crypto assets is to invest. However, before investing in crypto assets, you must first study the fundamental aspects, such as the purpose of these crypto assets, the technology behind them and the team behind their creation.</p>



<p>Some investors who believe in the fundamentals of a crypto asset will hold (HODL) the crypto asset for a long time. The easiest way for beginners to invest is by buying and accumulating crypto assets bit by bit, using a method called Dollar Cost Averaging.</p>



<p>The most important thing about investing in crypto assets is that you can start investing with small amounts. Even with only IDR 11,000, you can easily buy crypto assets using the Pintu application.</p>

<p>A trader needs to use technical analysis to look at price history, charts and other means of information to predict price movements. Trading crypto assets can be profitable but also carries high risks because the price of each crypto asset is very volatile.</p>



<p>Unlike stock or forex trading, crypto asset trading runs 24/7 all year round with no downtime. It takes discipline and also high flying hours to master crypto asset trading.</p>

<p>Blockchain is a collection of blocks that contain data that linked and sequenced with each other. In other words, blockchain can be considered a digital data storage system. The most recent linked block must have the hash information from the previous block. Each block will lead to the previous block and so on to form a chain.</p>



<p>If there is a bit of data in the block changes then the hash value will also change.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="how-to-get-block-hash">How to get block hash?</h2>



<p>The hash of a block is taken from the summary of other hashes. Blockchain uses The Merkle Tree to generate a hash which is referred to as a Merkle Root. You can see from the diagram below:</p>

<ol><li>In Block 11, transaction 0 (Tx0) and transaction 1 (Tx1) are made into hash 0 and hash 1. Then these two hashes are combined to produce hash 01.</li><li>Transaction 2 (Tx2) and transaction 3 (Tx3) are made into hash 2 and hash 3, and combined to produce hash 23.</li><li>Combination hash 01 and hash combination 23 are combined and <em>hashed</em> to generate transaction root/merkle root (Tx_Root).</li></ol>



<p>Thus, if there is a change in one of the transactions, the hash value will change, the merkle root will change, and the block hash will also change.</p>



<p>We can see in the following example what will happen if any data or hash is changed in the blockchain network.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="how-does-blockchain-work">How does blockchain work?</h2>



<p>Let&rsquo;s take an example of two interrelated blocks as follows.</p>

<ol><li>A proof-of-work block is considered valid if the resulting hash has a small value and meets the mining difficulty target. If we look at the above example, the two blocks have a small value because the hash begins with a zero. <p>If anyone changes the contents of one of the blocks, the hash will change.</p>



<p>For example, suppose someone wants to change the transaction in block #2 between Hudson &mdash;&gt; Gorman from $45 to $50. As this data changes the hash of block #2 as well as subsequent hashes will change.</p>

<p>To make a valid block, the miner must re-mine the block by finding a hash that has a small value and follows the level of mining difficulty (in the following example, the hash must start with four zeros).</p>



<p>If the miner succeeds in generating a hash with a small value and in accordance with the level of mining difficulty, the miner must also replace the data from the next block.</p>



<p>If someone changes the data from the transaction it will be easy to find out because everyone who runs the blockchain has a copy of the blockchain data from the beginning to the latest block.</p>

<p>We can see that the Hash of blocks #2 and #3 between Peer A and Peer B &amp; C are different. This way miners can decide which chain they want to follow. So what if there are two different blockchains?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="how-do-miners-come-to-an-agreement">How do miners come to an agreement?</h2>



<p>As we know that with blockchain technology, it allows the Bitcoin network to run without a central party. This is one of the benefits of blockchain. But if we look at how Blockchain works, how can miners know which chain they should follow?</p>



<p>Broadly speaking, miners will always choose the longest chain. However, if there are two different chains there will be a fork. When a branch occurs, one group of miners will follow one chain and another group will follow another chain. Even if for example the hashing power of the miners in these two chains is the same, it is very likely that one of the miners will find the block first than the other miner. If the block is found first, it will create a block with the longest chain, miners who choose to mine a different block will eventually merge back into the longer chain.</p>



<p>To produce a long chain requires a lot of energy, so bad actors are very unlikely to fake transactions because when a transaction is changed the actor has to change the transactions after it and has to compete with all the hash rate around the world.</p>

<p>Bitcoin is a new asset class that can store value and also sent to anyone around the world for transaction. It is a form of digital money but it is not issued or controlled by any central government. Bitcoin runs by series of computers around the world that form a decentralized monetary network. Bitcoin software is open source, meaning that anyone around the world can run a Bitcoin server and participate to be part of the network.</p>



<p>Bitcoin was created in 2009 by someone going by the alias &ldquo;Satoshi Nakamoto.&rdquo; Bitcoin, unlike government money such as dollars or euros, has a limited supply. There will only be 21 million Bitcoin that can exist in this world. This is what distinguishes Bitcoin: it is the first scarce digital asset whose supply cannot be increased or printed in the same way that money can.</p>

<p>Bitcoin is valuable because it is permissionless. Anyone can send and receive Bitcoin to anyone around the world without permission through an internet connection. Bitcoin is censorship resistant, meaning that no one can ban Bitcoin transaction. Bitcoin is also decentralized, which means that everyone can participate to be part of the network. Every Bitcoin transaction is recorded openly so everyone can validate each transaction. Bitcoin is also secured by cryptography that is impossible to penetrate, making it the world&rsquo;s strongest monetary network.</p>

<p>Many people invest in Bitcoin because they see Bitcoin as a store of value and a hedge against inflation. Bitcoin becomes a store of value similar to gold because it is scarce and hard to produce. But Bitcoin can also be better than gold. Unlike gold, Bitcoin can be sent anywhere globally 24/7 and costs almost nothing to transport. Because of its scarcity, security, high liquidity, and global availability, people believe that the Bitcoin price will go up over time and can be the alternative currency in the future.</p>

<p>A Bitcoin transaction is just a collection of transaction records that can be accessed by anyone. So instead of exchanging physical paper money, all of the transactions in Bitcoin network is written down and stored in a special database called the blockchain. The Bitcoin blockchain has complete records of who sends what amount to whom since the first time Bitcoin ever existed. Everyone that access Bitcoin will have the exact copy of all the records that are stored in their devices. Every transaction in Bitcoin is secured through cryptography. In order to verify the transaction and to ensure there will be no double-spend, Bitcoin uses a process called Proof-of-Work or mining.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="what-is-blockchain-and-how-does-it-work">What is Blockchain and how does it work?</h2>



<p>Blockchain is an immutable database, which means that once data is stored in the blockchain, it is extremely difficult and almost impossible to alter, change or delete it. When someone is doing a Bitcoin transaction, the transaction will be broadcasted into the Bitcoin network. In order for this transaction to be validated, there is a process called mining. Bitcoin miners will group transactions into a block and each block is linked with each other like a chain, making it immutable / tamper-proof. This is why Bitcoin technology is called the blockchain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="where-does-bitcoin-comes-from">Where does Bitcoin comes from?</h2>



<p>To validate the transaction and creating a block for the next transactions, miners need to perform <em>proof-of-work</em>. They have to solve complex mathematic puzzle by using computing power. This process requires electricity. Once a miner solves the puzzle and creates a new block, the miner will get two kinds of reward: a) fees attached to all transactions in the block, and b) freshly minted Bitcoin that will be introduced into the circulation.</p>



<p>Technically speaking, getting Bitcoin requires work/energy in the form of computing power/electricity. <em>Proof-of-work</em> mining helps Bitcoin secure its network without any centralized authority. Bitcoin reward is regulated under Bitcoin protocol, and the amount of reward will be reduced over time through Bitcoin halving.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading joli-heading" id="what-is-bitcoin-halving">What is Bitcoin Halving?</h2>



<p>Halving is a process to ensure that there will only be 21 million Bitcoin. Every roughly 4 years, the freshly minted Bitcoin that is rewarded to miners will be cut in half. When Bitcoin was started in 2009 miners got 50 BTC every time they create a new block. In 2012, the reward was into 25 BTC/block. In 2016, the reward was cut into 12.5 BTC/block. The latest halving occured in May 2020, which reduced the reward to 6.25 BTC/block.</p>

<p>Bitcoin price is based on supply and demand. The supply of Bitcoin is limited but the demand continues going up, that is why Bitcoin price goes up from year to year. Every day people around the world would buy and sell Bitcoin, they will create an offer and also bid a price for Bitcoin through crypto exchanges. This activity creates volatility in Bitcoin prices because the Bitcoin market runs 24/7 nonstop. Another factor that affects Bitcoin prices is halving. Bitcoin halving creates a higher scarcity of Bitcoin, reducing the rate of new supply. As supply decreases while demand for Bitcoin remains the same or even rises, people are willing to pay more to get Bitcoin.</p>

The layer-2 industry was originally created because Ethereum always has network congestion issues. <p>Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is a decentralized financial services industry in the crypto world. Altcoins in this industry usually function as a governance token in a DeFi application. The first principle regarding this is to look for altcoins whose token distribution is community-oriented and not to the big investors behind it. <p>Ethereum is a decentralized computing platform that executes computer programs called <a href="https://pintu.co.id/en/academy/glossary/smart-contract">smart contracts</a>. As with <a href="https://pintu.co.id/en/academy/post/what-is-bitcoin">Bitcoin</a>, with Ethereum anyone can transfer digital money without the help of an intermediary institution (bank or other financial institution). The technology that allows for online financial transactions without intermediary institutions is called <a href="https://pintu.co.id/en/academy/post/what-is-cryptocurrency-and-blockchain">blockchain</a>.</p>



<p>However, the capabilities of the Ethereum blockchain are different from the Bitcoin blockchain. Ethereum blockchain has more complex capabilities and is more flexible than Bitcoin. This is because Ethereum allows developers to freely create applications on its blockchain.</p>

<p>The most common use of the smart contract is for the creation of the ERC-20 token (the most commonly used token standard on the Ethereum blockchain). All ERC-20 tokens have a smart contract that records the balance of the token at each Ethereum address. If there is an ERC-20 token transaction between Ethereum addresses, the smart contract token will recalculate a new balance for each address.</p>



<p>For example, A wants to send 100 USDC (ERC-20 token pegged 1:1 to US dollars) to B&rsquo;s address. To complete the transaction, A sends the instruction to USDC smart contract to transfer 100 USDC from address A to address B. The USDC smart contract will reduce the balance in address A by 100 USDC, and increase the balance in address B by 100 USDC. This smart contract calculation is executed by nodes or servers of the Ethereum blockchain network and is final.</p>
