Jakarta, Pintu News – Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s largest power company, reported a nearly 300% spike in theft of electricity used for cryptocurrency mining from 2018 to 2024.

In 2018, 610 cases of electricity theft were recorded, while by 2024, the figure has dramatically increased to 2,397 cases. This rise indicates an increase in unauthorized crypto mining activity in the country.

Crypto Mining and Electricity Theft

Crypto miners illegally manipulate electricity meters to access electricity at cheap rates without paying. This activity not only costs TNB millions of dollars but also increases the risk of power outages.

TNB is now working with the police, Energy Commission, and anti-corruption officials to conduct raids and stop illegal mining operations across the country.

These miners set up secret mining operations that use a lot of electricity, sometimes in other people’s homes, leading to very high electricity bills, reaching $278,400 (RM1.2 million) for unaware property owners.

To tackle illegal crypto mining, TNB utilizes smart meters that track electricity usage through radio signals and can detect unusual activity instantly.

TNB also imposes harsher penalties under the Malaysian Electricity Supply Act, with fines of up to $212,000 (RM1 million) or imprisonment of up to 10 years for anyone who disrupts the power grid.

These efforts have helped stabilize the electricity system in Malaysia. In other countries such as Kuwait, the government has also taken similar action by targeting more than 1,000 illegal crypto mining sites that cause power outages.

Global Impacts and Efforts to Boost the Digital Economy

TNB’s case shows that the issue of illegal crypto mining is a global problem. Malaysia is keen to support its digital economy but also needs a reliable power grid.

TNB’s initiative is a bold move to protect the country’s energy grid. Around the world, other countries are facing similar challenges and looking for solutions to balance the growth of the digital economy and the stability of their energy infrastructure.
