Jakarta, Pintu News – Bitcoin (BTC) adoption rates continue to rise beyond projections. Today, Bhutan announced that they will donate 10,000 BTC to build Mindfulness City as part of their efforts to develop the economy.
The country has launched a development program that will invest up to 10,000 BTC, equivalent to nearly $1 billion, for the construction of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). In his national day speech, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck explained the reasons behind the decision.

“As your King, I must ensure that every Bhutanese becomes a custodian, stakeholder and beneficiary of the GMC. This is for our people, our youth, and our country,” he added.
The country chose to invest heavily in Bitcoin in relation to infrastructure projects in the real world. Officials said that this BTC allocation will benefit the citizens of Gelephu Mindfulness City. It will serve as a strategic reserve and productive asset.
Bhutan plans to use a cautious strategy to make profits while keeping the value of BTC stable, not by selling it.
The importance of governance and transparency was also mentioned. All decisions will follow the same rules. The use of Bitcoin will focus on the preservation and sustainable growth of capital, so that these assets can facilitate development with minimal risk.
Estimates show that the country controls more than 11,000 BTC in total, which is one of the highest in the world, according to Akham.

This announcement comes after speculation earlier this year, when on-chain data showed a massive transfer of hundreds of BTC from government-linked wallets. However, the authorities said that they had no intention of selling.

To mitigate the impact of youth migration, Gelephu Mindfulness City opens in 2024 with the aim of creating gainful employment within the country. The area will also attract investment opportunities in various fields.

The city covers about 10% of the country’s total area. This will provide flexibility in the regulation of fintech companies and digital assets to support increased crypto mining activities.
Independently, the city will embark on a unique land policy where its citizens are seen as shareholders in the project. As such, the people of the country will be able to enjoy the resulting success.
Apart from Bitcoin, the country has also been developing its presence in the blockchain space. They have screened several digital assets as their strategic reserve.
The Kingdom of Bhutan has adopted the use of crypto in the tourism sector. The country has also been working with some of the largest exchanges to increase its usability in the real world.
