Altcoin Season Fades as Bitcoin Reclaims Its Throne in the Crypto Market

Jakarta, Pintu News – As reported by CoinEdition, the Altcoin Season saw a decline in early 2026, as trade tensions between the United States and Europe reignited, coinciding with a shift in crypto market dominance back to Bitcoin (BTC).

Causes of Altcoin Season’s Fall

Altcoin Season’s decline came after US President Donald Trump said that starting February 1, the US will impose a 10% tariff on imported goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland.

Trump stated that the tariffs would be imposed unless the countries agreed to the US’ request to take over Greenland. He added that the tariffs would be raised to 25% on June 1 if there was no agreement on what he called a “full and complete purchase” of the island from Denmark.

European leaders responded with threats of retaliation. EU officials mentioned that they could activate the anti-coercion instrument, a legal framework designed to counter economic pressure and trade threats from other countries.

This tool, often dubbed the EU’s “big bazooka”, allows the bloc to implement countermeasures if negotiations fail.

Altcoin dominance fades after surge in late 2025

In that context, market data suggests a major shift away from altcoins. The Altcoin Season Index notes an altcoin season at the end of 2025, when the numbers spiked above the 75 level. This period came after months of decline earlier in the year, when the index remained in Bitcoin’s dominant territory.

However, the rally did not last long. In October, the index fell below the 50 mark again, signaling the end of altcoin performance at large.

As we entered 2026, the index briefly climbed back above 50, but soon fell to 39, indicating market conditions that again favored Bitcoin over other alternative cryptocurrencies.
