Jakarta, Pintu News – Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana SOL->Current SOL PriceRp 0Market Cap-Trading Volume-Circulating Supply-, recently expressed his controversial views on layer-2 (L2) solutions. According to Yakovenko, there is no good reason to develop L2 solutions as layer-1 (L1) solutions can be faster, cheaper and safer.
Yakovenko emphasized that Solana (SOL) only generates about 80 terabytes of data per year, which he said shows that the storage limitations for the L1 blockchain are not as great as one might think.
Yakovenko added that Solana (SOL) competes with every existing L2 solution, challenging long-accepted paradigms in the blockchain ecosystem.
Check out the full news below!
In Yakovenko’s view, multiple L2 solutions are not only redundant but also inefficient. The founder of Solana (SOL) argues that the number of truly valuable smart contracts is limited, so creating multiple L2s would be a waste of resources.
Furthermore, Yakovenko has referred to L2 solutions as “parasites” that take priority transactions from the base layer. This shows his skeptical view of the approach currently widely adopted by various blockchain projects to improve scalability and efficiency.
Ethereum ETH->Current ETH PriceRp 0Market Cap-Trading Volume-Circulating Supply-, as one of the largest blockchains, is also facing challenges with its L2 solution. The quarterly transaction revenue of Ethereum (ETH) has dropped dramatically by 95% from the highest peak recorded in the fourth quarter of 2021.
This situation suggests that Yakovenko’s criticism of L2 may be true. The crisis highlights the potential drawbacks of relying too much on L2 to address scalability and transaction cost issues, which could have been addressed by a more efficient and integrated L1 approach.
Anatoly Yakovenko’s views may be controversial, but it is undeniable that this discussion paved the way for new thinking on how blockchain should be developed and optimized.
Will the future of blockchain rely on the development of more advanced L1s or will it continue to rely on L2s for performance improvements?
