Gambar Beware, Binance Users Targeted by New SMS Phishing Scam!

Jakarta, Pintu NewsRecently, Binance users were surprised by a very convincing SMS phishing attack. These attacks use the same sender number as official notifications from Binance, fooling many users.

Reports from BeInCrypto indicate that there has been a significant increase in consumer complaints regarding this issue on X (formerly Twitter).

Targeted Phishing Campaign

According to BeInCrypto, phishing SMS received by Binance users often warn about unauthorized activity in their accounts, such as adding new two-factor authentication devices.

The most common message informs the recipient about an unexpected linking of the Binance API with Ledger Live and asks them to call the phone number provided.

Some users reported that this message appeared in the same thread as legitimate Binance notifications, adding to the confusion and prompting them to respond. The criminals behind this campaign seem to capitalise on a publicly reported Binance user data leak on a dark web forum.

Binance Countermeasures Against Phishing

In response to the increase in SMS smishing incidents, Jimmy Su, Binance’s Chief Security Officer, confirmed that Binance has expanded its Anti-Phishing Code feature to SMS. This feature was previously only available for email.

This code is a user-defined identifier that appears in official Binance messages, which helps recipients recognize genuine notifications and avoid scams. The Anti-Phishing Code has now been implemented in all licensed jurisdictions where Binance operates.

In addition, Binance notes that both registered and unregistered users have reported receiving suspicious texts, suggesting that attackers may be utilizing a database that includes phone numbers of individuals who are not actively using Binance.

Safety Implications and Suggestions

With a data leak involving approximately 230,000 user records from Binance and Gemini reportedly being sold on the dark web, security experts suggest that this leak may have originated from a phishing attack rather than a direct system breach.

The suspected threat actor group uses leaked information, such as names, phone numbers, and emails, to design messages that give the illusion of authenticity. Users are advised to be very careful with the SMS they receive and use the security features provided by the platform, such as anti-phishing codes, to avoid falling victim to scams.
